When we become members of the United Methodist Church we vow to uphold it by "our prayers, our presence, our gifts, our service, and our witness."

Here is one of the ways we make ourselves available by our gifts:

Donate Items to Sell on Craigslist

The church is accepting donations to be sold on Craigslist.  Did you know that the church recently sold several items on Craigslist, for a profit of $3,200?   If you have working/non-working items, let us know.  Everything from cars, tools, toys, sports equipment, computers, appliances, etc., can be sold on Craigslist and the money will go toward general operating expenses. You may donate the item to the church or sell it yourself.

Have you ever wondered how to sell on Craigslist?  Here is a brief introduction on how to do it and how to avoid most of the pitfalls.  First, you need a computer and access to the internet.  Then take a digital picture of the item you want to sell.  Put the digital picture on the computer, then go to to list the item.  Click the “Post Classified” button near the upper left corner of the page and follow the directions. Once this is completed, Craigslist will send you an email.  After you open the email and follow the directions, your item will be posted on Craigslist.

When creating the classified listing, experience shows that it is best to accept only local sales, no out-of-state sales.  Next, only accept cash or US Postal service money orders to avoid scams.  If you accept any other forms of payment, you put your bank account at risk, as well as potential loss of the item itself.

List your phone number and the best time to call, for instance, most people don’t like receiving calls late at night.  Interested folks will call or e-mail.  Accepting first come, first served is usually the best so the first buyer who arrives with cash gets the item.  Give directions to potential buyers over the phone or in an e-mail. Don’t include directions in the listing unless you want folks visiting your house at all hours.  It's best to set up an appointment for a time to view the item.

Most buyers will try to get a little better deal when they come to get the item.  If you feel this is acceptable, then barter.  If not, list the item as firm and don’t budge on the price.  If you haven’t received any calls or e-mails, the price is probably set too high.  Check the listings yourself and see what items like yours are selling for and change the price to be competitive.  This is done with the e-mail from Craigslist using the edit listing function.

Contact any member of the Finance Committee if you have questions.
