Instead of  signing up for a time of praying at the church, this year many more can participate in an Easter Prayer Vigil by choosing a time away from the church building to dedicate to these requests. These requests were submitted at UMCC on Palm Sunday, 2019 for this very purpose. The church will not be open in the overnight hours, but will remain open for a while following the Tenebrae service and on late Saturday afternoon if you wish to pray at the church.

In this prayer vigil tradition, awaiting the glorious celebration of the Resurrection, prayers are offered during the quietest darkest hours following the Good Friday Tenebrae Service, through Saturday, and up to Easter morning worship services. Dedicate yourself to a time and spend a few moments with each of the listed requests and add others as your heart turns to God. He will hear them all.

You may submit prayers to be added to this list by using the comment fields below, or by emailing the church office.

#GivingTuesday

#GivingTuesday is TODAY!

One of the great things about The Advance is that it allows you to invest your resources where your passion answers specific needs in the world.

What are you passionate about? Education? Church development? Health? Disaster response and relief? Economic development? Clean water and sanitation?

Are you passionate about a particular area of the world (Asia, Africa, North America, etc.) or a particular area of impact?

Wherever your passion lies, The Advance can connect you with missionaries and projects that you can support.

At UMCmission.org/give, you can search for UMC-related projects and missionaries that align with your passion. When you specify a destination for your gifts, that's exactly where every dollar goes; not one dollar of your gift goes to overhead.

Mission u Studies This Weekend!

Mission U event is this week, and you're invited to join in! The theme this year is “Beloved Community.” This Friday and Saturday, September 22-23, at UMCC.

Study leaders are Linda Haynes, presenting Living as a Covenant Community: Spiritual Growth and Fran Lynch, presenting Missionary Conferences of the United Methodist Church in the United States. Alaska Conference is highlighted as one of the three conferences in the study. For more info, visit aumwmissionu.blogspot.com.

Living as a Covenant Community: Spiritual Growth Study

Covenants are found in the Bible from the moment God created man and woman until the last page of Revelation. The 2017 Spiritual Growth Study examines major covenants throughout the Bible and what they reveal about God's character and eternal love for us. This study will enhance your understanding of how God works with us, in us, and through us.

As we explore these covenants, we will discover that covenantal living calls us to acts of mercy and justice, not only with those in our community, but with all—regardless of their social, political, financial, or religious standing. Through covenantal living, we are connected to God, others, and the whole creation.

As we grow to understand the divine covenants made by God with our ancestors, and thus with us, our faith and our lives will transform. Our responses to God's covenants will guide our lives towards greater compassion and openness.

Through this study, we come to marvel at our covenant God, grow in our love for God, for each other, and for our neighbors near and far.

Missionary Conferences of The United Methodist Church in the United States

The aim of the study is to give an overview of the three missionary conferences in The United Methodist Church, the contexts out of which they grew and their current engagements: The Alaska United Methodist Conference, Red Bird Missionary Conference, and the Oklahoma Indian Missionary Conference are a hybrid of home and international missionary work.

What does the future look like for these conferences? Broad-ranging conversations are taking place around this question. The General Board of Global Ministries and the missionary conferences are exploring best operational and structural options for maximizing mission and ministry going forward in these unique locations. These dialogues, different in each case, have begun and will take place across the 2017– 2020 quadrennium. The objective is mutuality in mission partnership and collaboration, which provides the heartbeat of all productive mission within the United Methodist connection.

Birchwood Camp’s Jamboree

Birchwood Camp will be hosting a jamboree next Sunday, August 13th. There are events and activities starting at 3 pm and going into the evening.

Go for a jaunt around camp on the one mile Fun Run or 5k running course, take a boat or Stand Up Paddle Board out on Psalm Lake, check out the new Archery Range, or head out to the Challenge Course.

Then, top it all off with a camp cookout – complete with s’mores.

Not ready to go home yet? Then stay and check out the silent and live auctions for the chance to bid on some amazing and unique items!

Just want to go on the lake and eat a s’more? That’s fine! Not really into camp activities and just want to check out the auction? That’s fine too! We’d love to see everyone there, no matter how long or short your visit is.

Call the Camp office at 907-688-2734 to RSVP! ($25/person registration for activity + dinner, $100 family cap)

Church is a Verb Happening Soon

Our Annual “Church is a Verb” event is coming up soon. On Sunday, August 13, we will take our worship out of the sanctuary and into the local community to be the hands and feet of Jesus. Following a brief service, we go out into the community to do various projects that usually only take a couple of hours.

Our big question right now is which projects will we tackle? Whom can we solicit to help us find beneficial projects? We need both active and sedentary tasks. The challenge is to do projects that make a meaningful impact without taking on more than we have the skills or resources to complete.

For example, some of our previous projects have been:

  • Highway clean up
  • CCS grounds clean up
  • Chugiak Elementary school grounds clean up
  • Birchwood camp projects,
  • Blanket knitting
  • Church playground repair

If you have any comments or suggestions please talk to Dave Flagg, any Mission team member, or Pastor Tim. We are always looking for good projects to further our mission of ministry and service.
